BERA is the Botswana Educational Research Association. It was founded in 1982 and it is currently one of the registered Non-Governmental Organizations in Botswana. It is a member of the Botswana Council of Non-Governmental Organizations. (BOCONGO)
BERA is a member of BOLESWANA an organization comprising of Botswana Educational Research Association (BERA), Lesotho Educational Research Association (LERA), Swaziland Educational Research Association (SERA) and Namibia Educational Research Association (NERA). It is also one of the Chapters of the Educational Research Network in Eastern and Southern Africa (ERNESA), a registered trust comprising twelve countries whose Secretariat is in Botswana.
To contribute to national development through conducting educational research and participating in educational policy and planning. To build national research capacity and dissemination of information to stakeholders in education in Botswana and internationally.

The following are the BERA objectives:

  • To bridge the gap between educational researchers, policy makers and practitioners in Botswana.

  • To enhance the role of research in educational policy and planning.

  • To enhance the role of research in national development.

  • To provide a hand on training in educational research, in order to build local research capacity and expertise in Botswana.

  • To co-ordinate educational research activities in the country.

  • To serve as Botswana’s outreaching arm in disseminating information on educational research within the region.

  • To promote and support educational research that improves the quality of life of Botswana citizen through research that focuses on issues of equity, democracy, botho, national development and social justice.

  • To encourage inter-disciplinary research through collaboration with other research networks in the country.

  • To hold regular meetings to discuss topics of educational research.

  • To promote special interest groups on topics of educational research, that is, comparative education, school improvement, gender in education, student life and HIV/AIDS

  • BERA carries out research.

  • It uses its experienced membership to carry out consultancies.

  • Through its training schemes, BERA runs training workshops and seminars for inexperienced researchers. Their proposals are submitted to the Research Sub-committee and the researcher is attached to an experienced researcher to help polish the proposal until it is acceptable. The proposal will then be presented at one of the training workshops for exchange of ideas with colleagues.
