Nuclear energy comes from uranium, a nonrenewable resource that must be mined.

Other energy sources that are regulated in terms of the BERA Act are; coal, nuclear and any other that may be specified by the Authority. In the case of coal; prices and supply agreements are regulated through issuance of licenses. Nuclear is still an untapped resource even though exploration data has revealed that uranium mineral is available.

Licensed activities under Other Energy

The following activities are licensed under the Other energy;

  • Generation and co-generation of electricity and heat.
  • Any installation where single or aggregate capacity exceeds 100kW.
  • Buying and selling of coal.
  • Exportation or importation of electricity.

License Requirements

  • Name and addresses of the applicants.
  • Description of the specific activity that a license is required for.
  • Geographic area where the activity is to be carried out.
  • Financial capabilities (support letter from financiers or bank statements, projections etc.)
  • Technical capabilities (competence or skills, compliance to standards, engineering drawings etc.)
  • Land ownership or usage rights for the land where the activity is to take place (title deeds, lease agreements etc.)
